Nutrition Finds – Year of the Pulses

I’m sure many of you have heard us nerdy dietitians raving about 2016 being the year of the pulses, but if you haven’t, here’s a great link highlighting Pulses 2016! With food costs in Canada on the rise, pulses are an awesome source of (very affordable) protein and fibre (along with some nutritious micronutrients), foster sustainable agriculture and are pretty darn delicious!

What is a pulse? Also known as legumes, they are edible seeds. Some common pulses include kidney beans, chickpeas, split peas, black eyed peas, and lentils.

The Food and Agriculture website has some yummy recipes posted to incorporate pulses in your weekly menu. Or you could check out my oh-so-easy authentic recipe for dhal from my archives – it’s my go-to for a quick Indian meal that you can batch cook for a meal for the next few days or portion and freeze for future lunches/dinners! Try it out for yourself!
